Quartet Champions Association
of the
Southwestern District

The Mission of the Quartet Champions Association of the Southwestern District (QCA) is to encourage District Quartets to improve to the highest possible levels of performance excellence and to preserve the history of Southwestern District Quartet Champions. In doing so the bond between quartet members who achieve this honor is reinforced and new generations will gain knowledge and appreciation of the distinguished achievements and legacy of quartets in the District of Champions.

Here are some current QCA & SWD projects:

How to Have a Great Quartet Rehearsal (Power Point file)

Top Gun School

John Loot’s Memorial Fund — Each year’s SWD representatives to International Contest will receive significant financial aid to help defray travel expenses from this fund. This fund was named after the late baritone of the 1956 SWD and 1958 International Champs The Gaynotes.

Tom Masengale Memorial Fund — The newly crowned SWD Quartet champions receive a full scholarship to SWD Top Gun School which is held the following January prior to International Prelims. The school brings in the top coaches in the Society for a full weekend as this scholarship encourages our new SWD champions to strive to higher levels of excellence on the International level. This fund was named after the late bass of the 1941 International Champs The Chord Busters.

Bayou City Music Committee Fund — SWD representatives to the International Seniors Quartet Competitions at Midwinter will receive a donation to defray travel costs from this fund. This fund is named after the 1989 Seniors International Gold Medallists, Bayou City Music Committee (Marlin “Grif” Griffith, Johnny Hammond, Dave Ewing, Ken Pacetti.)

Mo Rector Fund — SWD representatives to the MBNA America College Quartet Contest receive travel assistance from this fund, named after the Society's first Double Quartet Gold Medallist, the late Mo Rector (Gaynotes ’58 and Mark IV ’69).

After winning the coveted O. C. Cash Memorial Trophy, the members of 1998 SWD Champions High Cotton noticed that 50 years had taken its “toll on the bowl.” In addition to the many scrapes and bruises, some of the past quartet champions' names could hardly even be read. A large portion of the trophy was either tarnished or simply worn away, exposing the underlying copper. With the full financial backing of the QCA, the trophy has been brought back to full luster with every name now easily legible.
